I have always responded to the living, tactile and honest qualities of wood. When I begin a new assemblage, I sort through piles of wood in a process resembling an excavation. As I consider the woods’ edge, angle and mass, I allow myself the luxury of getting lost in the dialogue between the wood and my psyche. Movement and form are the essence of my work in wood. From life’s immense energy I capture and distill a “living plane” that responds to natural light. Light reveals the honesty and the mystery of the piece and is an integral part of the experience. Color enhances the journey. The wood relief assemblage is an amalgamation of shapes that move across planes in a rhythmic, progressive journey. The viewer travels through my planes and experiences the freedom to participate. |
